School Election Study Wins Award
The Oakland School is a winner of
the National Association of Student Councils Ruth McNulty
Award, presented by the National/Parent Mock Election
in recognition of the school's outstanding educational
project during the 2008 national election.
The Oakland School was chosen from
hundreds of schools nationwide to receive this national
award.
The Oakland School conducted an all-school
immersion into an American Civics program called Celebrate
Democracy - Election 2008.
Students, parents, and staff interacted
with speakers from political parties. Elected state
and local offficals visited the school. Workshops and
other breakout groups explored the candidates and campaign
issues. Students and staff voted, along with many parents,
in the 2008 National Student/Parent Mock election.
On Monday, November 3, students, parents,
and staff conducted a community service project when
they placed 10,000 hangers on the doorknobs of homes
in selected city neighborhoods. The red, white &
blue hangers encouraged voters to go to the polls.
The application for the award was
submitted in January to the National Student/Parent
Mock Election organization. Some photos can be seen
